Tips for Being Vegan While Traveling

Image
When I told everyone I would be studying abroad this summer, it seemed the first response I got was “Wow, how exciting!” and the second was “Are you going to be vegan while traveling?”. I had to try so hard every time not to roll my eyes. Of course, I would stay vegan while traveling, and it is not too hard! During my study abroad, I stayed in England but also flew back and forth between France and Amsterdam. Moreover, I have also been traveling back and forth between US states multiple times per year due to my choice of college. In all of my traveling situations, I have never been put in a situation where I could not find vegan food. Here I am going to share a few tips for anyone who might be worried about how to eat vegan in airports, on the road, or in foreign countries. First, let’s talk about airports and airplanes. If you are on a long flight where the plane will be providing a meal, call the airline and request a vegan meal. When I did this recently, the vegan o...

The Top 5 Mistakes that New Vegans Make

Image
As easy as it is to change to a Vegan diet, when transitioning to this way of eating (and of life) there are some things in my opinion that can keep you from being your best and make this shift more difficult for you. These are as follows: 1.        Eating a majority of vegan junk food 2.        Not getting the nutrition you need 3.        Consistently going back into old habits 4.        Expecting perfection right away 5.        Isolating yourself from your family and social circle These are easy pitfalls to fall into when newly transitioned into veganism, the first one is something that I struggle with myself. It is very easy when switching to veganism to switch out every meat and dairy meal with it’s vegan alternative. While this is fine at first, if not properly managed after the first couple months of time then it doesn’t lead to ...

Mung Bean Sprouts

Image
So, imagine that you’re out at a wonderful Vietnamese restaurant. You order the veggie phở, and maybe even some tofu bánh mì. When they bring out the soup and sandwich, there comes with it a side dish of basil, lime, sliced jalapeño, and these crunchy little thing-dos . Even though the soup is getting cold, and your sandwich is soggy, you can’t stop eating the garnish! These, my friends, are mung bean sprouts. They are so easy to make. They are super cheap to make. They are guiltless fun to snack on. Most importantly though, they’re really good for you.   Enjoy, Tara Ingredients     ½ cup of dried mung beans     36 oz. glass jar     Mesh lid (or cheesecloth with a rubber band)     Water Directions Measure ½ cup of dried mung beans and pour into a large mason jar (they will grow quickly and need room to keep from mildewing). Fill the jar with water and cap with a large mesh lid. ...

How to Be A Vegan in College

Image
Before coming to college, I had only been vegan a couple months and was nervous about how to maintain this lifestyle while living on the school’s campus, eating  off their meal plan, and not even having a kitchen. Little did I know, being vegan in college turned out to be just as easy as being back at my house. Of course, everyone’s school is different, but here are the tips that make veganism a breeze for me while living at school Don’t be afraid to ask questions in the dining hall. This is my number one tip because I automatically assume foods are not vegan until proven otherwise. For example, I went the first couple months of school asking for the same dressing on my salad before finally finding out that the school uses a certain brand and EVERY dressing at the salad bar is vegan! If I had asked sooner, perhaps I wouldn’t be tired of balsamic vinaigrette by now ;) Make yourself known. I also recommend finding out who is in charge of camp...

How to Dehydrate Sage

Image
Good morning, good afternoon, good evening! Today I am going to talk about how to dehydrate sage. I recently purchased a dehydrator, my main reasoning to purchasing it was because I wanted to make dried fruit with out all of the extra sugar and preservatives included in the store bought kind. I also thought it would be fun to try dehydrating other things as I found them. While at the market the other day, I found this one pound bag of sage for a super good price. I thought that this would be perfect to test out my new dehydrator.  I tried dehydrating the herbs to different ways. In half of the trays I just put the full leafs and in the other half I put leaves that I cut up into smaller pieces. The full leaves can be used in things that the leaf can be taken out of. This includes things like soups, sauces and even rice! The smaller pieces can be used in anything else. I have included a picture below of the two different ways I dehydrated the leaves. I saved the stems to use ...
