How to Make Your Halloween Cruelty-Free, Vegan…..and Spooky!

Image
Welcome to October, friends! I don’t know if it’s the same for you but when this month rolls around every year I get excited for one of my favorite holidays….Halloween! The chance to be someone else for a little while, be able to get some candy, and possibly scare some people just sounds so fun! So I wanted to be able to help you prepare for this extra cool holiday by listing some ways that you can make sure the fun that you are having is entirely cruelty-free.                                      Find the Best Treats for the Job There are quite a few vegan options for treats…but unfortunately quite a few tricks too. Here are a few good options of candy that you can get, and give out on the spookiest night of the year! 1 Airheads Twizzlers   Swedish Fish Skitt...

Veganism and Nonviolence: How They Complement Each Other

Image
If you became vegan, it’s likely that you did for a majority of reasons. Sometimes it’s for the environment, sometimes for health reasons, and most often for the animals. These are all valid reasons to start eating a diet free from animal products and the violence that comes from a meat-eating lifestyle. I have had to ask myself a question lately though, after seeing some posts on a vegan group on social media about a man being killed by a bull in a bullfight. Some individuals on that group were glad that a man was killed (very horribly I will add), saying he (and others that harm animals )will get what they deserve if they come to an end like this. There was no compassion in their responses, and I began to ask myself; is this really the way that those of us with open minds to the harm done to others should really react? When we start the journey to care for other sentient beings, and find that we cannot justify consuming them just to satiate our appetite it seems to ...

Celebrating Autumn Sustainably and Vegan

Image
Here you are, September, and welcome! I don’t know about all of you out there, but I have been excited for autumn for a while. With its chilly days, colorful trees, Halloween parties and pumpkin spice everything, it’s the best time of the year. I have been ready for it to start at least since the beginning of August, and more even more intensely in the last couple of weeks. The bad thing is that some of the ways I used to celebrate are not so friendly for others on the planet. So, in honor of the first day of autumn coming up next week, here are some ways to prepare for it and celebrate in an ethical and environmentally friendly way. 1.     Make your own pumpkin spice treats What else says autumn like pu...

The Top 5 Mistakes that New Vegans Make

Image
As easy as it is to change to a Vegan diet, when transitioning to this way of eating (and of life) there are some things in my opinion that can keep you from being your best and make this shift more difficult for you. These are as follows: 1.        Eating a majority of vegan junk food 2.        Not getting the nutrition you need 3.        Consistently going back into old habits 4.        Expecting perfection right away 5.        Isolating yourself from your family and social circle These are easy pitfalls to fall into when newly transitioned into veganism, the first one is something that I struggle with myself. It is very easy when switching to veganism to switch out every meat and dairy meal with it’s vegan alternative. While this is fine at first, if not properly managed after the first couple months of time then it doesn’t lead to ...

Crystals: Some Favorites and their Uses and Backgrounds

Image
To some, it may seem that using crystals to help realign our energies and our bodies is magical hocus pocus. The reality of it though is more than that. Essentially crystals parts of the earth that are millions of years old, forged during the earliest parts of earth’s formation. They are the most organized structure that exists in nature, meaning they have the lowest amount of entropy (a measurement for disorder). Crystals are structured in such a way that they respond and react to the inputs of all different energies around them, leading them to oscillate and emit specific vibratory frequencies. Because the crystal lattice within the gem is so balanced and orderly, the energy it emits is consistent, and when dissonant energy is inputted, it is balanced and transformed into a harmonic energy. The cells in the human body also vibrate at certain frequencies, as do the chakras (the centers of the human energy body). So when we come into contact with a crystal, its vibration...

On Veganism and Feminism

Image
Ever since I became a Vegan a short time ago, it has made me think differently about many aspects of my life and the culture around me. It also has opened my mind up to greater clarity about things I already believe. This much is true for the issue of my belief in Feminism and what that means for me now as a Vegan. In truth; to be a Feminist with emphasis on strengthening the social, political and especially reproductive rights of women and to yet drink milk that came from a forcefully impregnated cow just seems like a backwards step. Some may say that it’s just a cow, and that giving milk is what they are here to do but I have to put a stop to that kind of thinking. Just because a cow is an animal and you may not think that it has the same rights as you do, doesn’t mean that it deserves the kind of life that the dairy industry forces it to live. The life of a dairy cow is one of forced impregnation and unnatural life. Of course, the cow cannot produce milk unless i...

On Becoming Vegan

Image
As I write this I will have been consistently vegan again for almost two weeks now. The road to here has been rocky; almost like the path over a mountain with all it’s ups and downs. Even now I don’t believe that I can call myself a perfect vegan because I find it difficult to stay consistent (and I am so new to this) but I am giving it my very best effort because I feel this is of paramount importance. After realizing that I now have no more excuses for not changing my eating habits but that I enjoy the taste of eating animal flesh, I must do something different. So here is my journey from a meat eater, to veganism. My ways of eating have been varied over the years with the most consistent being that I ate pretty much whatever was on hand, or whatever was given to me. In my family, from my earliest memories, we ate what you would call the “standard American diet”: meat, cheese, carbs, and sugar. My Grandfather, a butcher, came from Germany when he was eighteen years old...
